What happened
President Donald Trump signed H.R. 6500, the Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act, 2027, on September 2, 2026. The law provides temporary funding for federal agencies through December 11, 2026. It provided funding across the September 30 fiscal-year boundary.
The controlling source is P.L. 119-103 on GovInfo. Division A, Section 106 sets the December 11, 2026 expiration, unless a covered activity’s funding is replaced or ended earlier by enacted FY2027 appropriations.
What “open” means
At our Oct 2, 2026 review, no government-wide lapse in appropriations was recorded. Federal agencies can carry out funded operations under the terms of the current law. Individual offices may still close or reduce service for weather, emergencies, staffing, or program-specific reasons.

We checked the enacted text on GovInfo, which confirms the final law’s identity and funding deadline. We now cite that text as the controlling source. The December 11 deadline is unchanged.
