Short answer: VA health care and scheduled disability, pension, and education payments generally continue. The slower parts are often claims, phones, and paperwork. Follow VA.gov and your facility—not a rumor that “the VA is closed.”
Benefits that usually continue
Compensation, pension, and many education payments are mandatory spending. They are not switched off by a lapse in annual discretionary appropriations. Direct-deposit dates can still slip if a Treasury or systems issue appears, but a shutdown is not a reason to expect benefits to be canceled.
The current continuing resolution also extended a set of veterans’ authorities through December 11, 2026. Program-by-program details belong on VA.gov and in the enacted law, not in a social post.
Health care
VA medical centers, clinics, and pharmacies generally keep providing care. Inpatient treatment, prescriptions, and emergency services are not treated like a visitor center that can be locked. Some community-care scheduling, research, and non-urgent administrative work may move more slowly if the supporting staff are limited.
Keep the appointment you have. If you cannot travel, use the facility’s published cancellation line rather than assuming the clinic is shut.

Upload evidence through VA.gov when you can. Keep copies. A delayed claim is not a denied claim.
What veterans and caregivers should do
- Keep medical appointments unless the facility cancels.
- Do not stop medications or skip community-care visits on the basis of a headline.
- Meet claims deadlines; a lapse is not an automatic extension.
- Use VA.gov and Ask VA before calling.
